What are 10-year luck pillars in BaZi, and how should you use them?
A BaZi luck pillar is one stem-branch step for 10 years. Sanming Tonghui counts 3 days to the solar term as 1 year, as in its 630-day example.
A 10-year luck pillar in BaZi is one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch that runs for 10 years, counted from the month pillar. Sanming Tonghui, the Siku text that names Wan Minying of the Ming, converts the gap from birth to the neighboring solar term at three days to one year. In its worked example that conversion is 630 days, one year and nine months, and the luck begins at Ding Chou. Use it as the rhythm of that decade beside the Day Master and the Month Command, with the calendar year's stem and branch beside it when the question names a year. A job offer, a diagnosis, a verdict, or a price stays on the record that already holds it.

What is a 10-year luck pillar in a BaZi chart?
A 10-year luck pillar is one stem-and-branch step counted from the month pillar, after the four pillars are fixed. Year, month, day, hour, and the Month Command are set out in what a BaZi chart shows. The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the day, the reference character in that season, as how to find the Day Master sets out.
Sanming Tonghui's chapter on major luck fixes the four pillars as the root, a tree, and reads the luck cycle as the season after that. One earthly branch runs 10 years. Three days hold 36 double-hours, and the chapter treats those 36 as 360 days, one year, because a day has 12 double-hours and a month 30 days. In one month, 360 double-hours convert to 3,600 days: 10 years on one branch, 120 years for a life.
A yang year stem with a male chart, or a yin year stem with a female chart, counts forward to the coming solar term and the pillars proceed forward. A yin year stem with a male chart, or a yang year stem with a female chart, counts back to the previous solar term and the pillars proceed backward. Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, and Ren are yang. Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, and Gui are yin.
How do you calculate the age a BaZi luck pillar begins?
Sanming Tonghui's example is a yang male born in a Jia Zi year, twelfth month, the 24th, Si double-hour, with Start of Spring on the 29th at Shen. From Si on the 24th to Si on the 25th is one day. On to Shen on the 29th is five days and three double-hours: 63 double-hours, 630 days, one year and nine months, the luck beginning at Ding Chou. The palace moves after those 21 months, and the next handover is 10 years later. Si on this site is 09:00–10:59, and Shen is 15:00–16:59.
Ding Chou is that year's Chou-month pillar, the month that opens at Minor Cold. At noon on January 20, 1985, the pillars are Jia Zi, Ding Chou, Ji Wei, and Geng Wu, Geng with the seventh Earthly Branch. The Day Master is Ji, yin Earth, and the Month Command is Chou, winter. The book's 24th and 29th are its own day numbers.
The chapter records a shortcut then in use, one year and eight months started at age two, and says it fails to show the actual elapsed count. The quarter named zheng yike makes the same rate exact: Chou double-hour on the first, Start of Spring at that quarter on the fourth, is three days and one year. One double-hour later, at Yin, adds a ten-day period. One earlier borrows one. Knowing the double-hour and missing the quarter, the chapter says, stays close.
Forward from Ding Chou the next pair is Wu Yin, the fifth Heavenly Stem with the third Earthly Branch. Backward, the previous pair is Bing Zi. A birthday within a day of a solar term is checked in what birth information a reading needs.
How does a 10-year luck pillar relate to the year in BaZi?
The decade sits beside an annual marker. In Sanming Tonghui the natal Tai Sui is the birth year's stem and branch, and the traveling Tai Sui is the calendar year's stem and branch. The Tai Sui chapter compares the Tai Sui to a ruler and the luck pillar to a minister. The major-luck chapter still reads a pillar it calls beneficial together with that year's Tai Sui and the minor luck.
Minor luck is the year of age. It fills out the decade, and the years before handover use it. Sanming Tonghui says readers of its time used only the major luck, while the minor luck still has a part. Zui Xingzi's account, recorded there, steps from the hour pillar, one pillar per year of age, with the year's yin or yang. A yang chart in a yang year, born in a Jia Zi hour, steps to Yi Chou, then one pillar per year. A yin chart in a yang year steps backward, weighed with the major luck and the Day Master.
The calendar year does not replace the decade. Write the 10-year pillar and that year's traveling Tai Sui on one line. What the year held stays on the calendar you already have.
How should you use one BaZi luck pillar for a stage?
Name the pair, the age it begins, and the age 10 years later, beside the Day Master and the Month Command. Sanming Tonghui says the luck pillar weighs the Earthly Branch: the stem is read with the branch, and a step read from the branch sets the stem aside. A note in the same book restrains what runs too strong in the luck branch and supports what falls short, threaded through the natal branches, and calls the annual pillar's link to the Tai Sui stem the tight part of a year. What a missing element counts places that clause inside the larger reading.
Wang's note on Luoluzi is why the 10 years split into a front five and a back five. Arriving at the stage called cap and belt from a place called bathing or sudden defeat still carries the phase just left. In those first five years, name the pillar you left as well.
How to turn a vague worry into a question a reading can answer is the shape: age, pillar, Day Master, Month Command, and the role already written down. Ask for the stage theme and, if you name a calendar year, the traveling Tai Sui. A fee to repair or replace a luck pillar sits with the paid-removal pitch in why you should never pay for curse removal.
What should you ask a reading about a 10-year luck pillar?
Ask for the decade's rhythm with the count visible. A personal reading calculates the four pillars from the birth date and time you provide, so the month pillar and the year stem's yin or yang are on the page to check. Put Sanming Tonghui's male or female category in the question when you want the direction named. To keep a reading for two years and ask follow-ups on the same chart, see pricing.
When the hour is uncertain, name the hour you want used. Zui Xingzi's account steps from that hour pillar inside the same personal reading. Ask for the solar term, the day count, and the pair.
FAQ
What is a 10-year luck pillar in BaZi?
One Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch, counted from the month pillar, running 10 years after the four pillars are fixed.
How do you calculate the starting age?
Three days to the solar term make one year, and one double-hour makes 10 days. In the Jia Zi example, five days and three double-hours become 630 days, one year and nine months, beginning at Ding Chou.
Does a luck pillar tell you what a calendar year will bring?
No. The pillar is the 10-year stage, and the calendar year is the traveling Tai Sui read beside it. The year's events stay on the calendar you already have.
What do you write down before using a luck pillar?
The pillar, the age it begins, the Day Master, the Month Command, and, when the question names a year, that year's stem and branch.
